If you live in Sydney, Cockatoo Island makes a great day trip. It is in the heart of Sydney Harbour and only a quick ferry ride from circular quay. Cockatoo Island is a great place to explore and has an amazing history. You will find 10 different convict sites on the island, which are all on the World Heritage List.
Cockatoo Island is a former convict penal so there are lots of buildings to explore. later it was used as a ship dockyard however, today it is a popular arts and entertainment venue. It also plays host to the Biennale of Sydney.
Cockatoo Island is also a great place to stay over night and offers a variety of accommodation including a heritage home or you can camp on the waterfront camp ground. If you are bringing a picnic lunch, you can find a beautiful picnic spot with panoramic harbour views. There are also two licensed cafés, Societé Overboard and the Marina Café plus a Bar for you to enjoy.
